Government Rebates & Incentives

Victorian solar rebates, explained plainly

State and federal programs can meaningfully reduce the cost of solar and batteries. Here's what exists, who may qualify, and how applications actually work.

The four programs worth knowing

Victoria

Solar Homes PV Rebate

Eligible Victorian owner-occupiers and rental providers may access a rebate of up to $1,400 towards a rooftop solar PV system. Eligibility is assessed by Solar Victoria against criteria including household taxable income, property value and prior participation.

Victoria

Interest-Free Solar Loan

Eligible Solar Homes applicants may also apply for an interest-free loan of up to $1,400 to further reduce upfront cost, repaid over four years. Loan availability and settings are set by Solar Victoria and can change.

Federal

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, eligible solar systems create certificates that are almost always applied as an upfront point-of-sale discount by your installer. The number of certificates depends on system size, your postcode zone and the remaining deeming period — no fixed dollar amount is guaranteed.

Federal

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

A federal program reducing the upfront cost of eligible home battery systems, applied through your retailer or installer at the point of sale. The benefit varies with battery capacity and program settings, and batteries must meet program requirements including VPP capability.

Program amounts, settings and availability are set by Solar Victoria and the Australian Government and change over time. Figures shown are indicative maximums current at the time of writing — never a guarantee of eligibility or benefit.

General eligibility requirements

Exact criteria are program-specific and set by government. For the Victorian Solar Homes rebate, the broad requirements currently include:

  • You own and occupy the property (rental provider pathways also exist)
  • Combined household taxable income below the Solar Victoria threshold (currently $210,000)
  • Property value below the Solar Victoria threshold (currently $3 million)
  • The property has not previously received a Solar Homes rebate
  • You use an authorised solar retailer and accredited installer
  • For federal STCs: system size within scheme limits and accredited design & installation

Always confirm current criteria directly with Solar Victoria and the Clean Energy Regulator before making a decision.

How applications work — and who manages them

1. Check & quote. Start with our preliminary eligibility check, then receive formal quotes from authorised solar retailers in our partner network.

2. Apply. Victorian Solar Homes applications are lodged via Solar Victoria's portal with your retailer's support. Federal STCs are handled by your installer and appear as a discount on your quote.

3. Install. Once approvals are in place, an accredited installation partner completes the work. Approved retailers and installers — not Solar One Plus — manage formal applications and installations.
